Spring - In climatology, the season of the year between winter and summer during which temperatures gradually rise. It is generally defined in the Northern Hemisphere as extending from the vernal equinox (day and night equal in length), March 20 or 21, to the summer solstice (year’s longest day), June 21 or 22, and in the Southern Hemisphere from September 22 or 23 to December 22 or 23. The spring temperature transition from winter cold to summer heat occurs only in middle and high latitudes; near the Equator, temperatures vary little during the year. Spring is very short in the polar regions. For physical causes of the seasons, see season. via Britannica.com
The Arab Spring: The End of the Beginning - No one could say for certain what Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi was thinking when he set fire to himself on Dec. 17, 2010, in the town of Sidi Bouzid, but he probably could not have imagined that his action would spark in his own country a Jasmine Revolution, which in 2011 evolved into a wider revolt that became known throughout the world as the Arab Spring. His self-immolation galvanized citizens in North Africa and the Middle East to protest against government repression and corruption and in the process bring about the downfall of three heads of state (Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya). As reports of his desperate act soon spread far beyond Tunisia, various media—satellite television news, mobile phones, and social networking Web sites—turned a local suicide viral. What made Bouazizi’s self-destructive response to an alleged shakedown by a local policewoman so electrifying was the sense among residents across the Arab world that it could have happened to them. via Britannica.com
